Scope and Contents

Includes typescript and galley proofs of Chapter 1 entitled "The Desert and the Balkans" (provisionally entitled "False Dawn in the Desert", "Hard Trials", and "Minutes of January 1941"), annotated with notes and corrections by various individuals including: WSC, Denis Kelly, William Deakin, Charles Wood, Anthony Eden [later 1st Lord Avon], 1st Lord Wavell, 1st Lord Ismay, CSC, Lieutenant- General Sir Henry Pownall, Jay Gold and Randolph Churchill.Also includes proofs from: Chapter 2 "The Widening War" (provisionally entitled "The German Move Against the Balkans"); Chapter 20 "The Soviet Nemesis"; Volume 2, Chapter 29 "Germany and Russia" [Soviet Union].The file also includes some source material including: copy of a telegram from [General Jan Smuts] to WSC on their future goals in the Middle East and North Africa (January 1941).The majority of material in the file dates to 1948 - 1950.
