Includes notes and comments by George [Gordon] Allen on subjects including: the naval campaign against Italy, 1940; the views of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Forbes [former Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleet] on the use of the Home Fleet in case of invasion; naval operations in the Mediterranean, June - December 1940; naval operations at Dunkirk [France]; the naval attack on Dakar [Senegal]; the development of amphibious warfare; Chapter 1 "The National Coalition"; Chapter 7 "Back to France"; Chapter 9 "The French Agony".Also includes: covering letters from Allen; notes and annotations by WSC, William Deakin and Denis Kelly; galley proofs of Chapter 1, Chapter 5 "The Deliverance of Dunkirk", Chapter 13 "At Bay" (provisionally entitled "Alone"), Chapter 22 "The Mediterranean Passage", Chapter 30 "Ocean Peril" (provisionally entitled "The Air and the U-boats" and "Surface Raiders - 1940", including proofs from Volume 3, Chapter 3 "Blitz and Anti- Blitz. [Rudolf] Hess", provisionally intended to feature in Chapter 30), Chapter 31 "Desert Victory", Appendix B "Loss by Enemy Action of British, Allied and Neutral Merchant Tonnage" and Appendix E "List of Operational Code Names". The proofs are annotated with suggested amendments and corrections by individuals including Allen, Deakin and Kelly.
