Scope and Contents

Includes typescript and galley proofs of the appendices to Volume 2 including: Appendix A "Minutes and Telegrams, May - December 1940"; Appendix B "Loss by Enemy Action of British, Allied and Neutral Merchant Tonnage"; Appendix D "Correspondence Relating to Dakar [Senegal] between Mr Churchill and Mr [Robert] Menzies" [Prime Minister of Australia]; Appendix E "List of Operational Code Names"; Appendix F "List of Abbreviations". The proofs are annotated with suggested amendments and corrections by various individuals including: WSC, William Deakin, Denis Kelly, 1st Lord Cherwell [earlier F A Lindemann] and George [Gordon] Allen.Some source material is also present in the file, including: War Cabinet prints of telegrams received from the Secretary of State for War [Anthony Eden, later 1st Lord Avon] during his visit to the Middle East (October 1940); extracts from War Cabinet prints of telegrams by WSC, June 1940.Also includes: galley proofs of telegrams and minutes incorporated into the main text of Volume 2; typescript and galley proofs from Chapter 7 "Back to France", Chapter 8 "Home Defence. June", Chapter 11 "Admiral [Jean] Darlan and the French Fleet. Oran" [Algeria], Chapter 13 "At Bay", Chapter 26 "Relations with Vichy and Spain", Chapter 30 "Ocean Peril" (provisionally entitled "The End of the Year"), Chapter 31 "Desert Victory" (provisionally entitled "The End of the Year"), the unpublished chapter "Behind the Fronts" and Volume 3, Appendix D "Estimated British and German Air Strengths, December 1940"; lists of errata and corrigenda for Volumes 1 and 2; numbers of words cut from the appendices; notes from WSC, Kelly, Allen (3) and Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Pownall (2).The majority of items in the file date to 1947 - 1948. The appendices are listed under the letter under which they appeared in published form.
