Includes typescript and galley proofs annotated with comments and suggestions by [George] Gordon Allen of the following chapters: Chapter 22 "War"; Chapter 27 "The Combat Deepens" (provisionally entitled "Progress of the Conflict" and "October"); Chapter 28 "The Magnetic Mine"; Chapter 29 "The Action off the River Plate"; Chapter 30 "Scandinavia. Finland". Also annotated by various individuals including WSC, William Deakin and Chips Gemmell, WSC's secretary.Also includes galley proofs of appendix N "Extract from War Diary of U.47, November 28 1939" and the unpublished appendix "Scapa Flow"; notes by Allen on new material for chapters 29 and 30.Also includes some source material including: paper by Morris Edwards on the battle of the River Plate and naval battles in the First World War; copy of signal by Rear-Admiral Sir Henry Harwood on the condition of the Exeter and his other ships after the battle of the River Plate (1939); papers by Allen comparing enemy ships in 1914 and 1939, on the activities of surface raiders, September 1939 - April 1940, and on the battle of the River Plate; notes by Allen on the defences of Scapa Flow [Orkney, Scotland], the losses of the Royal Oak and Rawalpindi and the attack on the Norfolk; copies of minutes by Admiral of the Fleet Sir Dudley Pound, 1st Sea Lord, on the defence of Scapa Flow (1940).Most of the material in the file dates to 1947 - 1949.
