Scope and Contents

Correspondents include: Sir George Rendel [British Ambassador to Belgium] and Andre de Staercke [Secretary to Prince Charles, Regent of Belgium] on the Belgian Congo [later Zaire, then the Democratic Republic of the Congo] contribution to the Abyssinian [later Ethiopia] campaign and Belgium's capitulation in 1940; "Bert", Sir Arthur Harris, on the date he became Commander in Chief, Bomber Command; Godfrey Carter on "Crusader" [British North African operation] and the battle at Sidi Rezegh [Libya]; Desmond Flower, director of Cassell and Company, on the book's index; French General Jousse on Allied landings in French North Africa; George Bilainkin on Yugoslavia [later Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia]; 1st Lord Portal of Hungerford [earlier Sir Charles Portal] (3); Ridley Pakenham-Walsh; German Vice-Admiral Bernard Rogge on confusion over HMS Dorsetshire and Devonshire. Subjects covered by the file include: readers' comments on errors and WSC's coverage of matters such as Dutch submarines in Malaya [later Malaysia], tanks, the activities of 10th Indian Division in the Middle East, the battle of Greece, General Sir Alan Cunningham in Abyssinia [Ethiopia], WSC's flight from Bermuda in 1942, and General Erwin Rommel.
