Scope and Contents

Correspondents include: representatives of George G Harrap and Company, particularly J H H Gaute, A J White, and George Harrap (65); [Geoffrey] Mason of Lloyds Bank; Val Gielgud on a projected film script; Anthony Moir of Fladgate and Company [WSC's solicitor] (7); William Deakin; Cyril Mason suggesting amendments particularly concerning John William, Prince of Orange (4); Sir Harold Wilberforce-Bell on a portrait of Brigadier Francis Palmes. Also includes notes and copies of correspondence from secretaries Jo Sturdee ("N S") [later Lady Onslow], ?Chips Gemmell, Lettice Marston [later Lettice Shillingford], Jane Portal [later Lady Williams of Elvel], Kathleen Hill, and Elizabeth Gilliatt.Other subjects include: the Danish, Dutch, French, German, Norwegian, Italian and Spanish rights; matters concerning the French edition including WSC's royalties; matters concerning the 1947 new edition including corrections, illustrations, and presentation copies; suggested amendments and comments on the book; a proposed United States revision; WSC obtaining a set of the books in 1946; requests for permission to quote extracts.Also includes: drafts of memoranda of agreement for the Danish and Dutch rights; Dutch publicity material; review from the Sunday Times; copy of April 1743 letter from Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough; extract on the "last days" of John, 1st Duke of Marlborough, to be published in the Times; royalty report from Charles Scribner's Sons; copy of paper and published letter from Wilberforce-Bell.
