Scope and Contents
Correspondents on WSC's visit include: Victor Holbek, Danish Consul Royal in Switzerland; Duncan [? Sandys] on the broadcast of WSC's speech at the University of Zurich ["The Tragedy of Europe", 19th September 1946]. Also includes notes and copies of correspondence by Elizabeth Gilliatt, Lettice Marston [later Lettice Shillingford], M Staite and "N S" [Jo Sturdee, later Lady Onslow], WSC's secretaries. Most of the papers in this file date from 1946, and a large proportion are in French or German.Other subjects include: welcoming WSC; Palestine; gifts for WSC; requests for WSC's autograph, and requests for help; including Prussia [later parts of Germany and Poland] in a federalized Germany; the threat from the Soviet Union; the appointment of Albert Alexander [later 1st Lord Alexander of Hillsborough] as Minister of Defence; the Labour Government; sending British corn reserves to Germany.Also includes: postcards; poems and songs for WSC; photographs and drawings; material from Welt-Union, on the union of the world; programme for WSC's visit to Zurich; text of citation to WSC from the University of Zurich, and of the speech by the rector of the university; text of speech by the head of the Cantonal Government of Zurich; issues of the Neue Zurcher Zeitung on WSC's visit to Zurich; text of article on the importance of the ending of the Swiss blackout in the war.
