Scope and Contents

Letter from Shane Leslie (2127 Leroy Place, Washington [United States]) to Massa in which he comments on a speech made by [Sir Edward] Carson in Ulster [Northern Ireland], saying that it is insignificant "as the feelings of the Irish Irish do not count". He describes the chaos which has resulted from comments by F E Smith [later Lord Birkenhead] about Irish affairs, says that [Smith] has "done more than any single individual since Lord North to drive a wedge between England and the United States" and that he had hoped that the story would be hushed up. He says that he has abandoned hope of an Anglo-American alliance as the Irish in the United States are "in hysterical wrath" and that he has applied to join the Irish foreign legion.
