Statement of events surrounding the resignation of Lord Randolph Churchill [by Sir Henry Drummond Wolff]. Includes a conversation with [Robert, 3rd] Lord Salisbury about the possibility of forming a coalition government with Lord Hartington [later 8th Duke of Devonshire] as Prime Minister; [George] Goschen's approval for a coalition; Lord Hartington's opinion that it would create resentment among Liberal Unionists and that he would be unlikely to join Lord Salisbury's Cabinet; Sir Henry James' predictions about the members of the Cabinet; increasing support for Lord Randolph; and Queen [Victoria's] annoyance that Lord Randolph had written his letter of resignation from Windsor Castle.
