Letter from Vittoria [Duchess of Sermoneta] to Jennie [Lady Randolph Churchill] including: discussion of the outbreak of the First World War; Italian neutrality and hostility towards Austria; feelings of relief at the death of the Kaiser [Wilhelm II] experienced by the Italian nobility; the recall of the Austrian Ambassador in Italy who had refused to receive her family; problems faced by her friends who had to return to Italy after the declaration of war and the departure of [Count Albert] Mensdorff [Pouilly, Austro-Hungarian Ambassador] from London, about which she comments "It must nearly have killed him!".
