Scope and Contents
Letter from WSC (HMS Venus, At Sea Near Aden [later South Yemen, then part of Yemen]) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] including: apologies for not having written; his hope she has heard about his "pilgrimage" from "Eddie" [Edward Marsh] and the newspapers; description of his cabin and the roughness of the Red Sea; Admiralty orders to the captain to stop at any ports WSC suggests; his intention to study the affairs of the Somaliland Protectorate [later Somalia]; a letter from "C.B." [Henry Campbell-Bannerman, see CHAR 28/27/71] about WSC's position; and objections to "that rascal Sievier" living in his house.
