Scope and Contents

Letter from Lord Randolph Churchill ("La Outspanned on the Umfuli River 20 miles from Fort Charter" [Rhodesia]) to [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which he describes the irregularity and difficulty of communications, outlines his plans to investigate the gold fields near Fort Salisbury [Rhodesia], comments on [South African] administration as "weak ineffective & chaotic" and details his investments. He writes from Fort Salisbury giving his opinions of "Johnny" [John] Willoughby, and reports that his letters to the [Daily] Graphic about South Africa have annoyed [Cecil] Rhodes and others and informs her that he is not able to enclose the syndicate's accounts as he has discovered they are inaccurate.

Conditions Governing Access

The Churchill Papers are made available to researchers using Churchill Archives Centre and worldwide in digital format. For conservation reasons, the fragile originals are no longer issued to researchers.

This digital edition is open to researchers unless otherwise marked in the catalogue. Some material has been closed by the Cabinet Office or by Churchill Archives Centre in accordance with data protection legislation.
