Scope and Contents

Letter from Lord Randolph Churchill (Rewa [India]) to [Lady Randolph Churchill] including: his relief that she has not sold their house at 2 Connaught Place [London]; observations on a speech made by [Joseph] Chamberlain in Birmingham in which he mentioned the Aston [Birmingham] riots [of 1884]; comments on a rumour that Lord Randolph is to stand [as parliamentary candidate] for Salford [Manchester]; discussion of his visit to Calcutta [India] and the information he has obtained through meetings with "native gentlemen" and government officials; his planned itinerary; an urgent telegram from [Sir Henry Drummond] Wolff on which Lord Randolph comments "no political contingency would hasten my return by an hour"; and a narrow escape from a carriage accident.
