Scope and Contents
Telegram from Foreign Secretary [Anthony Eden, later Lord Avon] (Washington [United States]) to WSC marked "Secret" repeating a memorandum from Edward Stettinius [Secretary of State, United States] on the points raised by President Harry Truman in his conversation with Vyacheslav Molotov [Soviet Union Foreign Minister]: the "fair and reasonable" nature of the joint message from Truman and WSC to Marshal Stalin on Poland; Truman's assertion that failure to reach agreement will "cast serious doubt upon [the] unity of purpose in regard to post-war collaboration" between the three countries; and giving the text of a message to Stalin urging him to accept the above joint message as the basis for continued discussions with Molotov in San Francisco [United States]; and an accompanying press release on the meeting.
