Scope and Contents
Telegram from Sir Alexander Cadogan [Permanent Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs] ("Cricket" [code name for Anglo-American meeting at Malta]) to Sir David Scott [Deputy Under Secretary of State] (Foreign Office) marked "immediate" commenting on the letter from Major General Sir Edward Spears [Conservative MP for Carlisle, Cumberland] to WSC in which Spears quotes remark from Chief Clerk admitting that Spears was not actively employed and therefore no restriction applied to him [see CHAR 20/200/33]. Cadogan states that correspondence with Spears should not be continued without reference to him, and asks Scott to confirm that 1st Lord Templewood [earlier Samuel Hoare] is no longer drawing anything from Treasury.
