Scope and Contents

Telegram from Lord Halifax [earlier Edward Wood, then Lord Irwin, British Ambassador to the United States] to WSC marked "most immediate" and "personal". Halifax confirms that has telephoned Edward Stettinius [United States Secretary of State] with WSC's message which Stettinius undertook to transmit to Eleanor Roosevelt. States that Stettinius had passed on message from President Harry Truman suggesting that the funeral would have been a "natural and easy opportunity" for a meeting between Truman and WSC, and that after the funeral they might have had 2 or 3 days talk. Halifax states that Stettinius "plainly hoped it might be possible for both you and Anthony [Eden, later 1st Lord Avon, Foreign Secretary] to make the trip and talk fully with Truman and himself". With single annotation in red ink, probably by WSC.
