Scope and Contents

Note from John Colville [Prime Minister's Private Secretary] to WSC informing him that a large number of letters have come from the general public expressing sympathy with WSC personally on the death of President Roosevelt, and that a small selection have been sent to the American Embassy for John Winant [United States Ambassador to Great Britain]. Colville mentions that a large number of these letters express the hope that a statue of the President will soon be erected by public subscription, and many suggest that it should be placed next to that of Abraham Lincoln. [Initialled typescript] The reference to Lincoln has been circled in red ink, possibly by WSC.
