Scope and Contents

Extract from timetable, possibly for Parliamentary business, regarding the announcement of the formation of a new political movement to be called "The People". Reports that the announcement is being made by a group of MP's including William Brown [Independent MP for Rugby, Warwickshire], Captain Alec Cunningham-Reid [Conservative MP for St Marylebone, London] and Mr Edgar. Lists the three main objectives of the movement, which are to "stop the stream of inefficiency" emerging from the Party Caucuses, to punish those in high places "as after Pearl Harbour, when they deserve it", and to encourage MP's and Parliamentary candidates who subscribe to the programme and fight those who do not. [Typescript] Captain Cunningham-Reid's name has been underlined [see CHAR 20/199/28]. [It seems likely that this item, which survives in the 1945 Private Office correspondence has been mis-filed. Cunningham Reid lost the Conservative whip in 1942].
