Scope and Contents

Report by Desmond Morton [Personal Assistant to WSC] on "political tendencies in France" marked "secret". The report summarises the observations of Roland Pre, an organiser of the French Radical Party and serving member of the French Air Force whom Morton had interviewed. Pre had served on [Charles] de Gaulle's personal staff and his politics are described as liberal or right-wing socialist. He observed that support for the Communist Party in France has increased, that there are internal divisions in the Socialist party; the Resistance Movement has not become a political party and some members are dissatisfied with de Gaulle's political leadership; de Gaulle does not command much support within his Cabinet; and the municipal elections will not be an indication of political feeling in France. Typescript.
