Copy of a letter from Vera Lombardi [formerly Vera Arkwright] (Madrid [Spain]) to WSC asking him whether he would be able to help her return to Italy. She explains that she has escaped from Coco [Chanel] and the Germans and is due to return to Rome in January and relays a message from Randolph Churchill asking WSC to intervene. She explains that she had worked with Coco [Chanel] until 1937; had been taken to her in Paris [France] "by her orders and the methods of Her German friends"; is very concerned about her husband Alberto Lombardi because of her [British] nationality and the acts he has done against the Germans; that she had been taken prisoner and had been on Benito Mussolini's 'black list' on account of her nationality, her friendship with WSC and the British propaganda her husband had spread throughout the Italian army. Typescript. Original letter at CHAR 20/198A/73-74.
