(Untitled), 22 Jan 1945 - 28 Jan 1945
Scope and Contents
Memorandum of 22 Jan from Anthony Eden [later 1st Lord Avon, Foreign Secretary] to WSC replying to his minute about Walter Lippman's recent visit to Britain, and explaining that he believes all the Washington Embassy [United States] meant to say was that Lippman had expressed regret at not being seen by them. He explains that Lippman only spent four days in the country, three of which were occupied by engagements made by the United States Army, and that he had been informed in confidence on the evening of his arrival that WSC and Eden were leaving the next day for Paris [France]. Eden states that he has reported the facts to the Washington Embassy, asking then to assure Lippman of the pleasure WSC would have had in seeing him, and suggesting that they should try and arrange that future visits by distinguished Americans to Britain should not be entirely taken up by engagements made for them by US authorities. [Initialled typescript] Annotated "good" by WSC, and initialled and dated by him on 28 Jan.
