Scope and Contents

Typescript note from Desmond Morton [Prime Minister's Personal Assistant] to John Martin [Prime Minister's Principal Private Secretary] offering to see Alfred Webb Johnson, and explaining that he "is a little behind the times" since 100 medical students have already been earmarked to go to Holland if summoned by Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery [Commander 21st Army Group] and another 100 are standing by. Explains that the purpose for which the students will be used is inoculation "of new stuff into Dutchmen dying of starvation" rather than general doctoring, and gives the arguments for using them. Annotated by Martin that he thinks it worthwhile to reassure Webb Johnson, with further annotation by Morton that after more consultation with Martin they had agreed "NA" [?no action], "Let sleeping surgeons lie".
