Scope and Contents

Letter from WSC to Captain Cyril Falls [Military Correspondent of the Times] marked "private and confidential" replying in detail to his letter expressing anxiety about the conduct of operations in North-West Europe. WSC comments on the likely result of the offensive conducted by Field Marshal Karl Von Rundstedt [battle of the Bulge], expresses astonishment at criticism of Field Marshal Sir Harold Alexander [later 1st Lord Alexander of Tunis, Supreme Allied Commander Mediterranean Theatre] and describes role played by Alexander in North Africa and Italy. He denies that high appointments have now become political, but admits that the British and Americans have to be represented in accordance with the forces employed in the different theatres. The letter ends by praising Field Marshal Sir Alan Brooke [later 1st Lord Alanbrooke], who would have had the command in North-West Europe if this had fallen to the British instead of the United States. Carbon.
