(Untitled), 22 Dec 1944
Scope and Contents
Telegram from WSC to the Prime Minister of South Africa [Field Marshal Jan Smuts] marked "Personal and Top Secret" reporting on the situation in Western Europe: stating that the British have been pressing for some time for the emphasis of the advance against Germany to be north of the Ruhr [Germany]; and that General Dwight Eisenhower [Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary Force in Western Europe, United States Army] has reorganised the command structure; complaining about the situation in Greece: arguing against basing the British policy on the return of King George II of Greece; expressing his doubts over Archbishop Damaskinos [Archbishop of Athens, Greece] becoming Regent; and his fears about a Communist victory.
