Scope and Contents

Telegram from WSC to Field Marshal Sir Harold Alexander [later Lord Alexander of Tunis, Commander in Chief of the Allied Armies in Italy] marked "Personal, Private and Top Secret" asking his opinion on the immediately following telegram giving the text of a telegram to be sent to President Roosevelt [CHAR 20/175/35-36]; indicating that the Chiefs of Staff and the War Cabinet want General Mark Clark [Commander of United States Fifth Army] to be put in command of Allied Armies in Italy with Alexander becoming Supreme Allied Commander Mediterranean Theatre; asking Alexander's opinion on these matters and indicating that the War Cabinet feels he should not be over burdened with political matters which take him away from the battlefront.
