(Untitled), 24 Dec 1944
Scope and Contents
Letter from King George VI (Buckingham Palace) to WSC about honours in which he says he will not press WSC to accept [the Order of the Garter] while he is Prime Minister but comments "I feel that the Country will expect me to give you a high homour which it will acclaim as a fitting tribute for all your arduous work in this War". He gives his opinions on WSC's suggestions for honours for others as follows: [Anthony] Eden [later 1st Lord Avon] should receive an honour later "when the foreign situation is clearer"; Lord Cranborne [later 5th Lord Salisbury] who receive the Order of the Garter; Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham should receive the Order of the Thistle; deferring honours for the two Field Marshals until their campaigns are over; and his pleasure that [David Lloyd George] will accept [an Earldom]. He concludes that WSC must have "plenty of worries this Christmas time" and hopes for success on the Western Front. Signed manuscript.
