Scope and Contents

Letter from Leo Amery [Secretary of State for India and Burma, later Myanmar] to WSC stating that he was pleased that he had spoken up about Kowloon [Hong Kong], as there is no point in leasing land to the United States from China which they may have to apologise for having done; that whatever is said about not wanting to annex land it will become essential to make sure of certain points in order to secure Britain's post war defence, particularly air protection and communications and that he can see no reason why the little Malay States [later Malaysia] should not be transferred or that Benghazi [Libya] should not be leased for 99 years; that in the last war a committee was established to consider future territorial requirements; and enclosing a copy of his article published in the Empire Industries Association [see CHAR 20/95A/32] Signed. Annotated: "I shall be sorry if I have to lose Eddy. He has held the fort very effectively in the Lords.".
