Scope and Contents

Letter from WSC to Duff Cooper [later 1st Lord Norwich, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancter] marked "Private" regarding his future position as British representative with General Charles De Gaulle's committee of national liberation and stating that it would be disastrous if he accepted this position if he was following decisions with which he did not agree, promising an alternative position if this was the case. He refers to papers relating to General De Gaulle and his relationship with Britain and the United States [not present] and promises access to all material relating to this subject. The creation of a strong France is described as being possible only with the aid of Britain and the United States. General De Gaulle is viewed with suspicion by the United States and therefore the image of France being impersonal and collective should be encouraged. Signed. Annotated "My unchanging goal is a strong France friendly to Gt Britain and the U S A".
