Scope and Contents

Letter from WSC to the Foreign Secretary [Anthony Eden, later 1st Lord Avon] suggesting that Duff Cooper [Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, later 1st Lord Norwich] should be offered the position of Envoy or Charge d'Affaires in Italy and not that of Minister Resident at Allied Headquarters in Algiers and stating: that Allied policy towards Italy has been right and that they will eventually turn against Germany; that Italy should expect to lose Rhodes, the Dodecanese, Albania and all lodgements on the east side of the Adriatic and possibly Trieste and Fiume and that negotiations for this would be well handled by Duff Cooper; that Samuel Hoare [later 1st Lord Templewood] may resign from his position as Spanish Ambassador which should be filled by one of the "diplomates de carriere"; that he would like the [position of] Duchy [of Lancaster] at his disposal which would allow him to move Ernest Brown [Minister of Health] from the Ministry of Health.
