Scope and Contents
Letter from WSC to General Douglas MacArthur [Commander in Chief Philippines; Supreme Commander S W Pacific] marked "Private and secret" stating: that he was pleased to hear from General Richard Henry Dewing of his views about the Pacific situation and wished that they could be in closer contact; that he believes the process of ejecting the Japanese will be long and painful; that at their next meeting he will ask President Roosevelt and his staff to discuss the whole policy of the final combined attack upon Japan; that only a portion of Britain's military forces could be sent to the Far East due to lack of shipping; that if the operations continue to be successful and neutralise or destroy the Italian fleet then a powerful Eastern British fleet could exist in the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal; that he believes that once Marshal Stalin has been relieved of the pressure of German Army he will most likely wage war against Japan which would open up the possibility of an air attack and congratulates him on the progress he is making against the Japanese Signature in typescript.
