Telegram from WSC to President Roosevelt marked "personal and secret" regarding developments in French North Africa: States that he had already asked United States Headquarters in London [United Kingdom] to delay the plane carrying Charles De Gaulle [Leader of the Free French] for 48 hours and comments on the message sent by De Gaulle to General Henri Giraud [see CHAR 20/85/69] and on the need to bring the two men together; states that the North African settlement cannot be held up for "Symbol" [Codename for meeting between WSC and Roosevelt in Casablanca in Jan 1943] and approves election of "Kingpin" [General Henri Giraud] as French High Commissioner and Commander in Chief; comments on the importance of the appointment and arrival of Harold Macmillan [later Lord Stockton] Marked with red and blue lines in the margin.
