(Untitled), 04 Nov 1942
Scope and Contents
Telegram from WSC to General [Harold] Alexander [later Lord Alexander of Tunis, Commander in Chief Middle East] marked "immediate" congratulating him and his "brilliant lieutenant" [General Sir Bernard] Montgomery [General Officer Commanding the Eighth Army] on the 8th Army's victory [in the Second Battle of Alamein, Egypt]. WSC feels that the victory will shape the future course of World War [II] and would like to "ring the bells all over Britain for the first time this war". He urges Alexander to give him an occasion by capturing at least 20,000 prisoners and suggest that this will aid "Torch" [codename for the Allied invasion of North West Africa]. He also informs Alexander that "Kingpin" [General Henri Giraud] is meeting with "Ikey" [General Dwight Eisenhower] who will take the lead on events in the "Torch" area. Typescript.
