Telegram from Field Marshal Sir John Dill [Representative of the British Chiefs of Staff in Washington, United States] to WSC reporting the opinion of the United States Chiefs of Staff on proposed Anglo-American joint operations prior to their visit to England: Comments on American objections to "Gymnast" [Codename for operation in French North West Africa]; comments on plans for action in the Pacific and implications for "Bolero" [Codename for preparations for main Allied invasion of France]; comments on the views of General George Marshall [Chief of Staff United States Army] and Admiral Ernest King [Commander in Chief United States Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations]; states that he believes there to be highly placed Americans "who do not believe that anything better than a stalemate with Germany is possible."; suggests that WSC must convince his visitors of his determination to strike the Germans in Europe.
