Scope and Contents
Telegram from WSC to Field Marshal Sir John Dill [Representative of the British Chiefs of Staff in Washington, United States] marked "personal" commenting on the problems of "Sledgehammer" [Codename for plan to attack coast of France in 1942] and advocating "Gymnast" [Codename for operation in French North West Africa] as "the sole means by which United States forces can strike at Hitler in 1942.": comments on the implications of both "Sledgehammer" and "Gymnast" on "Round Up" [Codename for the liberation of Europe]; States that if President Roosevelt decides against "Gymnast" the matter is settled as it can only be done by troops under the American flag.
