Scope and Contents
Telegram from Field Marshal Jan Smuts [Prime Minister of South Africa] to WSC marked "most secret and personal" regarding Madagascar: states that he will await the visit of Major-General Robert Sturges [Officer commanding land forces in Madagascar] and Lieutenant-General Sir William Platt [General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, East African Command] before giving advice; reminds WSC of the effects of "weakness and double dealing of Vichy France" in Indo-China [later Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam]; suggests that Barnett should remain at Diego Suarez and that Vice-Admiral [? William Campbell] Tait [Commander-in-Chief, South Atlantic Station] should come to Pretoria to join in talks with Platt and Sturges.
