Telegram from WSC to Field Marshal Jan Smuts [Prime Minister of South Africa] marked "most secret and personal" regarding the situation in Madagascar: states that he is sending Smuts the telegrams he has received from Major- General Robert Sturges [Officer commanding land forces during occupation of Madagascar] [see CHAR 20/76/2-8]; comments on the role of Sturges; states that Lieutenant- General Sir William Platt [General Officer Commanding- in-Chief East African Command] has been instructed to visit Diego Suarez and thereafter to visit Smuts with Sturges; outlines three possible courses of action in Madagascar and comments on the advantages and disadvantages of each.
