Correspondence between WSC, Lord Cranborne [Secretary of State for the Colonies, later 5th Lord Salisbury], "A E" [Anthony Eden, Foreign Secretary, later 1st Lord Avon], Field Marshal Jan Smuts [Prime Minister of South Africa] and "C R A" [Clement Attlee, Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs] on a letter from the Duke of Windsor [Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Bahamas, earlier King Edward VIII and Edward, Prince of Wales] to WSC requesting transfer from the Bahamas, preferably to Canada or the United States; includes Cranborne's view that the United States and Canada would be the worst possible places for Windsor, Eden's rejection of the idea that Windsor might visit South America and Attlee's rejection of the suggestion that Windsor become Governor of Southern Rhodesia [later Zimbabwe]; also includes acknowledgement from WSC to Windsor and covering correspondence between John Martin and Francis Brown [Private Secretaries to WSC], William [Arthur] Clark [Private Secretary to Attlee], Sir Alexander Hardinge [Private Secretary to King George VI] and the Colonial Office.
