Prime Minister's printed personal minutes, August 1940. Includes texts of minutes from WSC (annotated with additional printed information) to: Sir Edward Bridges [Secretary to the War Cabinet]; members of the Cabinet and other government ministers; the Chiefs of Staff, General Sir Hastings Ismay [Chief of Staff to the Minister of Defence], and other senior military figures; F A Lindemann [later 1st Lord Cherwell, Prime Minister's Personal Assistant]; a press statement by WSC; and a minute from "A E" [Anthony Eden, later 1st Lord Avon, Secretary of State for War]. Subjects covered by the minutes include: the sinking of captured ships; King [Gustav] of Sweden's peace moves; naval losses in the north-west approaches; foreign soldiers serving in British forces and foreign corps; the situation in French West Africa [later Mauritania, The Gambia, Senegal, Niger, Mali, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Benin] and preparations for "Menace" [the code name for the Anglo-Free French mission to Dakar, Senegal]; the military situation in Egypt, Somaliland [later Somalia], and Libya; British troop provision for north Africa and in Kenya; the naval position in the Mediterranean; naval construction; the Joint Planning Committee; operational secrecy; air raid blackouts and repair work; the defence of the British mainland.
