(Untitled), May 1940 - Jul 1947
Scope and Contents
Correspondence (May - June 1940) between WSC and Sir Alexander Hardinge [Private Secretary to King George VI] and a draft letter from WSC to the King on WSC's request for Brendan Bracken [Parliamentary Private Secretary to WSC] to be made a Privy Councillor; the King refused as such positions were reserved "for those who have attained high office in, or rendered long service to, the State"; WSC persuaded him that Bracken had avoided high office by remaining as Private Secretary to WSC and not spreading false assurances about the British Air Force; cites precedent of Private Secretary to Arthur Balfour, Sanders, who was made a Privy Councillor in 1902; includes notes by Lettice Marston [later Lettice Shillingford, Secretary to WSC] and Leslie Rowan [Private Secretary to WSC] on filing the correspondence (1947).
