(Untitled), 21 Aug 1914
Scope and Contents
Letter from John S Churchill to Edward Marsh, [Private Secretary to WSC] on the application of a recruitment scheme by Field Marshal 1st Lord Kitchener [Secretary of State for War] for the Yeomanry, in which volunteers would be taken from their regiments and attached to a composite force, while those who chose to stay at home would receive the same pay as active service men, and while in Britain given as much leave as possible. Churchill states that this would place a premium on men who did not volunteer and would not encourage civilian farmers to make sacrifices to serve abroad. He also comments that the men of his squadron wished to go to war with their own friends and under their own officers. [Hand-written, with carbon copy].
