Scope and Contents
Letter from Sir Austen Chamberlain (9, Egerton Place [London]) to WSC (marked private) on Conservative opposition to the Irish Home Rule Bill. Chamberlain informs WSC that he has not sent WSC's letters to the press for publication and will not do so unless "obliged by events". He expresses strong disagreement with WSC's policy, saying that the United States would have approved postponing discussion of the issue for the duration of the war, but that now the Ulstermen are being sacrificed because of the need to pay "blackmail" to the National Volunteers and their "American paymasters". He ends by saying that WSC has failed to appreciate the importance of the issue of Home Rule and has destroyed "our [the Conservative Party's] belief in the honour of public men." [Manuscript signed by Chamberlain].
