Scope and Contents

Letter from WSC to Lord [Edgar] Robert Cecil [later 1st Lord Cecil of Chelwood], on the Irish Question, stating that he had discussed the matter with the Prime Minister, and that they felt that an undertaking by the Conservatives to keep the Government in office for the duration of the war was neither practicable nor desirable. WSC asks Cecil to consider the importance of the Irish Home Rule Bill as a military measure: "It is well worth while giving them their trophy, subject to proper conditions of postponement of operation and amendment".
