Scope and Contents
Letter from Vice-Admiral Sir David Beatty [Commander, 1st Battle Cruiser Squadron], (HMS Lion), to WSC, First Lord of the Admiralty, reporting on the work of the Battle Cruiser Fleet. Beatty passes on the fleet's feeling of "working up for a catastrophe of a very large character", mainly due to a lack of adequate means to deal with mines and submarines, and the lack of a safe base, particularly commenting on the poor defences at Cromarty [Scotland], Rosyth [Fife] and Scapa Flow [Orkney Islands], and the need for improved coastal patrols. [Typescript copy].
