Scope and Contents
Telegram from WSC, First Lord of the Admiralty to the Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleet [Admiral Sir John Jellicoe], reporting that Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock's 5th Cruiser Squadron had been destroyed by the [German cruisers] Scharnhorst and Gneisenau off Coronel [Chile]. WSC orders HMS Invincible and HMS Inflexible to be sent to the South Atlantic under Vice-Admiral Sir [Frederick] Doveton Sturdee, as Commander-in-Chief, South Atlantic and Pacific, with Vice-Admiral Henry Oliver appointed Chief of Staff in Sturdee's place, and Captain Charles Bartolome appointed as Naval Secretary.
