(Untitled), 30 Oct 1914
Scope and Contents
Letter from Vice-Admiral Sir John Jellicoe [Commander- in-Chief of the Grand Fleet] (HMS Iron Duke) to WSC [First Lord of the Admiralty] on the loss of HMS Audacious [sunk by a mine in the Irish Sea], particularly praising the behaviour of the crew. Jellicoe also mentions the shock of the resignation of Prince Louis of Battenberg [later 1st Lord Milford Haven, as 1st Sea Lord] and comments on naval movements and operations. He opposes moving the Fleet to Portland [Dorset] as this might be considered a retirement following the loss of the Audacious, and suggests the mining of the Heligoland Bight.
