(Untitled), 27 May 1913
Scope and Contents
Minute from WSC [First Lord of the Admiralty] to the 1st Sea Lord [Prince Louis of Battenberg, later 1st Lord Milford Haven] on the Mediterranean Fleet, particularly the possible withdrawal of HMS Yarmouth and HMS Weymouth ["Town" Class Cruisers] to Gibraltar for service on the trade routes on the outbreak of war. WSC comments that the Admiralty knew where all of the German fast cruisers were based, and that they should continue the present policy of placing a "Town" or "County" class cruiser to mark down each German vessel. He adds that he did not feel it necessary to withdraw the Yarmouth and the Weymouth from the Mediterranean for this duty, suggesting the construction of a class of 26 knot cruisers, armed with eight 7.5 inch guns.
