Scope and Contents
Letter from Admiral of the Fleet 1st Lord Fisher (Grand Hotel National, Lucerne [Switzerland]) to WSC, on the mobilization of the Fleet, and on the protection of commerce and food supply, recommending that he talk to Captain Francis Haworth-Booth, Naval Representative for Australia, who had engineered the most recent mobilization, stating that he was one of Fisher's "favourites": he had picked him "right down at the bottom ... he has had half his stomach cut out, but his brain is like a hive of bees"; also recommending that WSC speak to the "incomparable" Maurice Hankey [Assistant Secretary, Committee of Imperial Defence] on protection of commerce and food supply; also on the importance of naval aviation, which would supersede small cruisers and intelligence vessels, praising WSC for his decision to push aviation, but pleading with him not to take away young naval officers, "suckled on gunnery and sea fighting" to do a job a civilian could do better: "The civilian airman can always carry an expert for observing".
