Reference Code: GBR/0014/CHAR 12/9/41

Scope and Contents

Copy of a letter from WSC (Home Office) to King George V concerning the King's displeasure with his letter describing events in the House of Commons and discussion of the "Right to Work" Bill [see CHAR 12/9/39]. He points out that he had not been guided as to the expectations of the King and that by including his own opinions he was following the style he had adopted in such letters to King Edward VII. He asks to be relieved of the duty of writing such letters in view of the summaries of Parliamentary debates which are given in the newspapers and defends his phrase "there are idlers at both ends of the social scale". Manuscript in the hand of WSC.
