Scope and Contents
Typescript speaking notes for WSC's speech (Lord Mayor's Banquet, Mansion House, London) on victories in North Africa and successes under General Sir Harold Alexander as Commander in Chief Middle East and General Sir Bernard Montgomery as General Officer commanding the 8th Army; noting that the battles have been fought by forces from home and from the Dominions; the United States and the Battle of Egypt; policy towards Spain, Portugal and his hopes for General [Charles] de Gaulle and France; and his intention that the British empire should not be dissolved. Contains the phrase "This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning" Typescript speaking notes laid out in "psalm" style to aid delivery annotated by WSC in blue-black ink and in pencil by [Elizabeth Layton, Secretary]. Labelled [by Layton] "Corrected by newspaper report. Time of delivery: 22 minutes". Original envelope present.
