(Untitled), 03 Mar 1924
Scope and Contents
Letter from [Joseph] Austen Chamberlain (2 Morpeth Mansions [London]) to Winston Churchill, on Churchill's mistaken belief that Chamberlain had discouraged Stanley Baldwin [Leader of the Conservative Party] from securing the Westminster seat for him. Chamberlain explains that he had actually agreed with Baldwin's view that the Westminster Conservative Association couldn't be forced to accept Churchill, but would have to be persuaded to take him. Chamberlain repeats his advice not to fight the Association, as reports from the constituency said that Churchill would be beaten and assures him that he had acted through friendship.
